I read this article in the Boston Globe which says that the biggest threat for middle-age men is their loneliness. As men grow older, they tend to let their friendships lapse, and “loneliness has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke and the progression of Alzheimer’s. One study found that it can be as much of a long-term risk factor as smoking.”
The suggestion in the article was that men need an activity in order to keep up a friendship. I didn’t want my friendship with Steve to lapse, and I wanted to decrease my risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s, so I suggested to Steve that we start a podcast. I thought a podcast where we interview every surviving member of our high school class would be interesting, and he agreed. So that’s why we are doing this.
I think it is working – we are having fun and keeping in touch. And we get to catch up with old friends.
